Bar Code, the first mobile and interactive webdoc, co-produced by the NFB and ARTE France, won the FIPA d'Or Grand Prize for Web Creation at the International Festival of Audiovisual Programs (FIPA) in Biarritz, France, on January 28. FIPA created the new category this year to acknowledge groundbreaking audiovisual works. One hundred films, 30 directors from Canada and Europe, and a new spin on everyday objects: Bar Code is international and trilingual (English, French and German) and uses the objects that surround us as a starting point for examining who we are. Available on four platforms-a website, an iPhone app, an installation and a television program-this new collective work playfully extends the concept of interactivity beyond the computer.

NFB opens the 30th Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois with Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici

At the opening gala of the 30th Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois (RVCQ) on February 15, the NFB will launch the world premiere of Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici (Here and the Great Elsewhere) by Michèle Lemieux, whose film Stormy Night (2003) won the Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. This is the NFB's first animated film made using the pinscreen since filmmaker Jacques Drouin retired. The unique technique-the NFB's pinscreen is the only one still in use-is a testament to the institution's commitment to auteur animation. Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici is an abstract yet compelling philosophical tale that uses the Alexeïeff-Parker pinscreen as a metaphor for the particles that make up the universe. Produced at the NFB by Julie Roy.

Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici will be shown before the feature-length film Bestiaire by Denis Côté at the opening night of the RVCQ.

"Indignant and subversive, Pink Ribbons, Inc. resoundingly pops the shiny pink balloon of the breast cancer movement/industry, debunking the 'comfortable lies' and corporate double-talk that permeate the massive and thus-far-ineffectual campaign against a disease that claims nearly 60,000 lives each year in North America alone."

-John Anderson, Variety, September 15, 2011

Pink ribbons are everywhere, reminding us to walk, run, swim, and yes, shop, all in the name of fighting breast cancer. But what does it all really do for women with this disease? In the National Film Board of Canada feature documentary Pink Ribbons, Inc., director Léa Pool talks to women with breast cancer, experts, authors, activists and medical researchers, as well as the leading players in breast cancer fundraising and cause-related marketing, to paint a shocking portrait of how the pink ribbon campaign benefits businesses more than women with breast cancer.

The film opens in Canadian cities on over 30 screens beginning February 3.

A children's program has been planned to please even the most discriminating palate: Sunday, Oma's Quilt, Painted Tales - In Winter Still, and The Dingles: four marvellous short films that will awaken the magic in all of us.
