Cohen Sheldon
Born in Montreal in 1949, Sheldon received a BSci from McGill University and went on to Sheridan College in Ontario to study art. In 1972 he joined the NFB as a student trainee.
In 2005 a special collection of work was released: From Book to Film: Animated Classics by Sheldon Cohen, including The Sweater (1980), a classic that received 15 international prizes, most notably, the British Academy Award for Best Animation. Sheldon followed this success with a picture book version of the film and a sequel, the latter winning him the Governor General's Award for Children's Illustration in 1991.
Pies (1984) won the Blue Ribbon at the American Film Festival, and Snow Cat (1998), a Gemini Award nominee, Canada with the Best of Banff and was placed on the prestigious ALA list of notable videos. I Want a Dog (2003) has garnered many prizes at festivals in the United States and Europe, including Best Animated Short at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival.
Interested in helping students develop their own film ideas, Sheldon has given courses at Concordia University in Montreal and spent the 1998-1999 academic year teaching film animation at Harvard University. His most recent film with the NFB is an animated short called The Three Wishes (2006), based on the traditional folktale.
