Ackerman Nance
Called the "Margaret Bourke White of Canada" and compared to Paul Strand, celebrated photographer Nance Ackerman has been taking pictures around the world for over 20 years. Her work has also been featured in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times and Canada's Globe and Mail.
Her work often reflects her Mohawk heritage, and her photographs of First Nations women have been exhibited at the Aperture Foundation in New York. She also freelances for the Smithsonian Institution, documenting Indigenous cultures.
Ackerman teaches in Guatemala during the winter months, and her book, Womankind: Faces of Change Around the World - a collection of portraits and essays of women activists around the world - is available worldwide. Nance lives in rural Nova Scotia with her two children.
For the NFB she has directed Cottonland (2006) and Four Feet Up (2009).
