Portrait Obomsawin Diane

Born in Canada, Diane Obomsawin moved to France as a child. She spent the next 20 years there and began a career in graphic design. After her return to Quebec in 1983, Diane began concentrating on painting and illustration. She became involved in live painting and performance in New York City and Montreal, where she now lives. She is well known as a magazine illustrator. In 1991 her work earned her a Canadian National Magazine Award.

Diane studied animation at Concordia University, where she produced four films, some of which have screened at film festivals around the world.

In 1997, NFB producer Michael Fukushima invited her to direct two short films in the Understanding the Law collection. This animation collection is aimed at better informing the public on everyday issues of Canadian civil law, using humour, animation and whimsy. Diane directed two films in the collection, The Coat and The Worm. The Coat was in official competition at the 2000 Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France.

In 2002 she worked on her latest NFB film for the ShowPeace series on conflict resolution. Diane did the directing, writing and animation on Elbow Room, which deals with resolving disputes at the office.
