Shopsowitz Karen
Karen Shopsowitz is a producer, director, editor, and writer.
Karen is currently directing and editing My Father's Camera, a documentary about the historical and cultural context of home movies from the '20s, '30s and '40s, as told through the films of her father and other amateurs. Most recently, Karen directed and edited I Am A Rose, a moving documentary about a father's unique way of dealing with the death of his teenage daughter. The film was broadcast on CBC-Newsworld's Rough Cuts in February 2000. She also directed and edited a half hour fiction film called Angel Light, starring Sheila McCarthy and Martha MacIssac. This 16mm film was produced with the OFDC's Calling Card Program and aired on Showcase. It was selected for screening at the Montreal International Film Festival and recently received a medal at the Houston Worldfest.
Other documentaries include: A Mother's Grief (director and editor), produced by Associated Producers with CBC-Newsworld for Rough Cuts (March 1997) (Winner: 1997 Aquarius/Loss and Transition Film Award, Massachusetts; Bronze Apple, NEMN '98; Cindy Gold Award, '98 Nominated: HOT DOCS! '98); Wisdom and Wit: Irene Mary Spry, a documentary about political economist Irene Spry, who began teaching at 21 and continued teaching in her 90s (Finalist: 1997 New York Festivals); A Lot to Share (co-producer, director, and editor) about a synagogue and mosque that share a parking lot in North Toronto, and which won an honourable mention from the Jewish Video Festival in San Francisco; A Place To Save Your Life, which tells the story of the Jewish refugee community of Shanghai, China and which has aired nationally and internationally; and My Grandparents Had A Hotel, which has been shown nationally and internationally and has won several awards, including a Gemini for Best Original Music Score and a Silver Apple at the National Educational Film and Video Festival in Oakland, California.
Other credits include: Five half hour documentary programs (as director) for Good Earth Productions, one for Great Canadian Parks (Discovery) and four for History Lands (History Television); and Themes in My Art: Joyce Wieland (director and editor), a short 16mm film produced for the 1997 Toronto Arts Awards and aired on Bravo! She also co-produced Needle and Tread, a short film aired on Bravo! and screened at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival.
Karen has a Master of Fine Arts degree in film and video from York University and a Bachelor of Journalism degree from Carleton University in Ottawa.
