Lemay Nicola
After studying communications at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Nicola Lemay decided to specialize in animation. He attended the International Summer School of Animation at Sheridan College and participated in an advanced seminar with animator Richard William at the National Theatre School in London, England.
In 1999, Nicola Lemay directed his first independent film, The Star Eater, an animated short about a young boy who joins forces with a shooting star to destroy a dangerous star eater. This fantastic tale told through animated drawings provides a glimpse of Nicola's developing cartoon world. The film was selected at the Aspen Kidtoonfest in 2000 and can be viewed online at .
In 2000, Nicola joined the NFB French Program's Animation and Youth Studio as artistic director and animator on the Science Please! series. He directed the clips Magnets, The Light Bulb, Electricity, Fire, and Electromagnetic Radiation. The series won the 2002 Gémeaux award for best animated program or series.
In 2003, Nicola directed Noël Noël, a wild and whimsical 23-minute animated panorama that revives the great tradition of children's fairytales. The film won several awards both locally and internationally, including a 2004 Gémeaux award for best animated production.
He returned to the NFB in 2009, and has since been working on a stereoscopic 3D animated adaptation of Gilles Tibo's children's novel, Les yeux noirs/Private Eyes, which is due for release in early 2011. In addition, he has been working with the NFB and Roger Frappier's Montreal-based production company Max Films since 2004 on the development of Vinland, la légende du rocher percé, his first feature-length animated film.
