Paul Cowan is one of Canada’s most respected and versatile filmmakers. In a distinguished 30-year career, much of it at the National Film Board of Canada, Cowan has worked as director, cinematographer and writer, in both drama and documentary, and has been honoured with numerous international awards. His documentary credits include award-winning titles like Westray, a moving account of the 1992 Nova Scotia mining disaster; and The Peacekeepers, an in-depth profile of the UN Department of Peacekeeping. Never one to shy away from controversy, he has addressed such themes as reproductive rights, in Democracy on Trial: The Morgentaler Affair; the contested reputation of a war hero, in the The Kid Who Couldn’t Miss; and the
porn industry, in Give Me Your Soul. His feature drama credits include Justice Denied, an account of the wrongful murder conviction of Nova Scotian Micmac Donald Marshall Jr., and Double or Nothing: The Rise and Fall of Robert Campeau, which charted the eventful career of the renegade financier. Cowan is an Oscar® nominee for Going the Distance, his documentary about the Edmonton Commonwealth Games.
