Bertrand Marc
After graduating from the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Québec in 1982, Marc Bertrand acted in some 30 plays in theatres across the country, then worked as a researcher on three series for TFO and Radio-Québec. He then formed his own company, Les Productions CMB, and presented over 40 theatre shows as director and producer.
In 1995, Bertrand went to New York University to study film. After returning, he worked as assistant director and production manager on some 10 documentaries, including Le Rendez-vous de Sarajevo by Helen Doyle and Referendum - Take Two/Prise 2, a collective work by 22 NFB filmmakers. After assisting top documentary filmmakers like Michel Moreau, Marquise Lepage and Jean Chabot, he was named producer in charge of student productions at the Institut national de l'image et du son (INIS) in 1997 and 1998.
In 1998, Bertrand joined the NFB's Animation and Youth Studio and worked as producer on the Ludovic series, Cuckoo, Mr. Edgar!, 1974, Joséphine, From the Big Bang to Tuesday Morning, Clandestin, Lonesome Monsieur Turgeon, and the series L'Écran animé.
Bertrand was named producer in the Animation and Youth Studio in September 2000. Since then, he has produced a number of notable titles, including the 13-episode Science, Please! series (which won a Gémeaux Award in 2002 for best animated series or program), Nicola Lemay's Noël Noël, and Jutra Award winner Bleu comme un coup de feu/Blue Like a Gunshot, directed by Masoud Raouf. He also co-produced, with Michèle Bélanger, Nicolas Brault's film Antagonia, and Jacques Drouin's last film, Empreintes/Imprints, released in 2004.
In addition to film, Bertrand has been heavily involved in Web production. He co-produced the Perpetual Motions animation portal, which won two 2004 Boomerang awards, including the grand prize. One of his most recent Web productions is the fascinating Dépanneur Sylvestre site.
He has also produced several Web sites for children, housed at NFB Kids. They include The Mission: A Great Scientific Adventure, for 9- to 12-year-olds (winner of a Boomerang Award in 2002 and a Mim d'or in 2003); Noël Noël, a companion site for the film of the same name; and the Ultrabug Cliposcope (Boomerang Award winner in 2002), which allows young Web surfers to create their own animated clips.
Several of his productions were released in 2006: animator Tali's film At Home with Mrs. Hen and Theodore Ushev's Tzaritza, as well as Norman McLaren: The Master's Edition, a 7-DVD set bringing together the complete works of the genius of animation. He co-produced the latter with Marcel Jean.
